Recently I was introduced to ScentBird which is a monthly perfume subscription. At the bottom of this post is my unboxing video and initial reaction. The service is $14.95 + tax / per month and you receive a 8 mL ScentBird perfume refill. As with most subscription boxes you will first be asked to fill out a survey about your favorite perfumes, scents, etc.

For a size comparison, I’ve put together the chart below. When you receive a perfume sample from a beauty store or in a subscription box it is usually a 1 mL or 2 mL size. Rollerballs are 10mL, while with ScentBird you will receive a 8mL refill. Retail perfume bottles range an average from 30 mL to 100 mL.

The ScentBird subscription comes in a black, bubble envelope along with a signature ScentBird pouch and a travel-size signature, portable sprayer with your first order. I noticed in the video that the sprayer wasn’t labeled but later learned that this is because each month you will only receive a refill for the sprayer. I would prefer to receive a sprayer with each perfume, but I’m sure this would increase costs substantially. The refill is quick and simple to pull out and replace, once I figured out how to do it the first time. Each refill is labeled on the side with the corresponding perfume.

From my research in making the infographic, ScentBird is competing with the rollerball market as in terms of size and price, but is a better deal for your money and get to try out 12 scents instead of 10 for a year of perfume. ScentBird has many well known brands to choose from and are adding new ones constantly. I love that you get to choose which perfume you receive for the month…it’s not a “Surprise…hope you like it!” kind of subscription. Though I couldn’t tell you off the top of my head what the majority of the perfumes smell like. I would suggest doing the ScentBird survey to see which perfumes are offered in your profile and then go to the mall, take a whiff and mark your favorites to put in your ScentBird monthly queue.

ScentBird also has a SmartSearch so you can find a particular type of perfume quickly. For instance if you are looking for a “fruity” perfume or a “date night” perfume they have icons that represent each instance and a corresponding list of perfumes.

The drawbacks about ScentBird:
01. No refunds! If you don’t like the scent that you chose or it doesn’t mix well with your body chemistry, then you are shit out of luck and out $14.95. That’s why I suggest doing the survey and then going to the mall to smell the ones that are available in your profile.
02. Wearing the same scent all month long seems very repetitive and boring to me. I like to wear different scents on a daily basis, basically dependent on who I’m going to be around that day or what kind of mood I’m in.
03. You are limited to 2 sprays per day if you want it to last all month long. I’m like an old lady with perfume, you can smell me coming from the next aisle over. I always use more than 2 sprays per day if I’m wearing perfume…more like 3 or 4 sprays per use, 2 or 3 times a day!
04. The perfumes are packaged in ScentBird packaging with only their word that the perfume is 100% authentic. Is there any way that can be 100% verified…not really.
05. Wish they offered a male subscription as I’ve subscribed a few of my guy friends to Birchbox Man and they all say that they love the cologne and wish more samples came in a box. Which is ironic cause I hear women say the opposite.

What I appreciate about ScentBird:
01. The perfume sprayer is nicely built and functions nicely.  It is a great size for my purse and under the 3 fluid ounce rule for airline travel!
02. Love that I can get a spray perfume for about the same price as a rollerball, as I prefer sprays over a rollerballs.
03. Since I don’t wear the same perfume everyday, after half a year I would have a collection of luxury perfume refills to choose from.
04. Users have the options to sign up month by month or multiple month subscription options. They offer 3-month, 6-month and 12-month subscriptions along with gifting options.
05. The more I browse the website the more perfumes I see I want to try! So now maybe I’ll do at least one perfume review a month!

Check my video below to see my initial reactions to ScentBird. I’ve worn my DIOR : Hypnotic Poison for several days now and I absolutely love the smell of it. It is categorized under “party”, “date-night”, and “fall” and is described as, “Mysterious and mesmerizing, extravagant and bewitching, Hypnotic Poison is a magic potion for modern times. Audacious and profoundly feminine, the fragrance is an unsettling harmony, a fusion of contrasting olfactory facets.”
